The tipis are going back up here at Sol Mountain Farm, which really makes it feel like the season has arrived. We are so excited to dive into this season with open minds and giving hearts.
We have named our tipis in honor and respect of: Chief Ouray, the Weminuche Wilderness, and Paa (which means 'water' in the Ute language). In honor of the history and tradition of the native people who lived on our land before us, we raise the poles, hoist the canvas, and open its doors to provide visitors and campers an opportunity to return to nature and learn from her teachings.

The San Luis Valley is a place of extremes, extreme cold in the winter, heat in the summer, wind in the spring. Clouds literally pouring over the tops of mountains and the desert floor rising up to meet them. A harsh stunning place, full of hard working farmer cowboy types and spiritual seeking hippies. It’s home to the Great Sand Dunes National Park where a friend and I were fortunate enough to get a permit to pack in and camp for a night. The wind blew so hard when I woke up my tent was ‘caddy wompas’ as my Dad would say, but between the extremes there are these beautiful moments of tranquility, calm, clarity and peaceful harmony like every thing is as it should be. When people think of the beauty of Colorado they often think of Vail, Breckinridge, Telluride ect. But for me I can’t think of a more beautiful place than this gem in southern Colorado. #sanluisvalley#greatsanddunes#colorado
When you can’t see a f*#%ing thing.
I started early up Lake Como Road trying for two peaks, but called it quits around 12,600 when slick, snow-covered rock and low visibility combined with a high chance of storms. Made the right call: the Valley and Blanca group are under attack by lightning bolts right now.
Over this past weekend I was busy with several non-photo projects, so I had an assistant choose the photo I am going to post. Please see the video in the next post for a demonstration of the selection process.
I captured this image in the San Luis Valley during the spring migration of the Sandhill Cranes. The early morning sunlight produces some interesting shadows on the birds, silhouetting most of their bodies and providing a few highlights. Nothing says spring like thousands of birds passing through.

Culebra Peak - Colorado's southernmost #14er , and invariably the most expensive. It's beauty was matched only by the wind that day.
Just the Crestones and Chicago Basin group (both of which I've had to turn around on due to weather) remaining before I'm a Colorado 14er finisher. #culebrapeak#14ers#sangredecristomountains#sanluisvalley
