Recently wrote an essay regarding whether the garment industry in Bangladesh has successfully promoted development, addressing how the North uses the garment industry to maintain colonial control and ensure its own success at the expense of Bangladeshi development. I'm sad the narrative in terms of worker exploitation often neglects the neocolonial relations that premise the very existence of events such as the Rana Plaza and the ongoing exploitation that takes place in all the former colonies. We covered some of this in our event last month too so make sure to check it out if you missed out. At the end of the day, no one really wants to tackle the root issues, either to ensure profit gain, or because it hits home the violence of fashion. But people are being tortured guys. Literally tortured. We can't allow people in high positions to neglect this any longer and activism can no longer be conducted in a way that benefits the Northern consumer. It is literally perpetuating these colonial relations that are oppressing our sisters. Anyway, link in bio.

‘The final embrace’ 🖤This image is haunting. It makes us terribly sad to share it and do so with deep respect to the victims and their family and the photographer Taslima Akhter, the president of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Solidarity. We continue to share this devastating collapse, the worst in the history of the fashion industry, to ensure the safety and fair treatment of garment works worldwide remains a top priority. Fashion is not classed as a high risk industry and no one should die making our clothes.
We have seen much improvement in safety in Bangladesh but more needs to be done. 〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰
Taslima also took other photographs in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza collapse, talking to those rescued and injured, and the families of people who had died. Four years later, she returned to meet some of those people again to find out how their lives had changed.
Head to our blog to read the stories of Alam, Rupaly and Asma 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 www.fashionrevolution.org/rana-plaza-the-survivors-stories/

RUPALY worked as a machinist in the New Wave Style factory on the sixth floor of the Rana Plaza building. The day before, cracks had appeared on the walls, and the workers who arrived on the morning of 24 Apri 2013 refused to go in. The supervisors insisted that the situation wasn’t at all serious. “They said that should problems occur, we’d face them together”, Rupaly recalls. The manager of the factory also threatened to pay wages only for those who came to work as normal. Under pressure, she agreed to go in with the others.
ALAM's wife, Beauty, was also working at the Rana Plaza factory when it collapsed. Beauty’s body was never recovered from the ruins. She was one of 100 missing workers whose families were not granted any compensation for two years. Find out how Alam and his three children had to piece their lives together.
ASMA fell down and was buried beneath the rubble, when the Rana Plaza building collapsed. She was trapped there for 3 days, drinking her urine in order to prevent dehydration. Then she was saved. www.fashionr

Where do I start with this one - I'm such a peachy positive person but this subject gets me. I'm going to try and keep this brief because I'll just get all ranty😜

Synthetic materials in clothing release microfibres into our water supplies which enter our food and drinking water. There are products on the market you can put in with your washing to catch the fibres but it's probably more effective to ditch synthetic altogether and try and invest in natural fibres. It is hard to avoid, its everywhere, if you're buying brand new start checking your labels on the clothing and accessories you purchase #MoneyTalks.

#singleuseplastic is wasteful. Say no more. #Reusables for the win.

At ReAdorn I never buy #plastic materials but you will find plastic beads in my work but rest assured, they are always #reused from items sent into my #upcycling service. If it's already on the planet then I will reuse it but I will try my very best not contribute to the production of new plastic items.

The piece photographed is old now (apologies for the photo clarity) but it's a gorgeous example of my reused plastic beads. I donated this piece to the rainbow collective for auction on the 1 year anniversary of the #ranaplaza tragedy.

Rana Plaza was a commercial building used by big corporate fast fashion companies to make a big sum of their clothings to be shipped all over the world. This environment had child labor and unsafe working conditions in which it resulted in a building collapse that “injured 2,500 and killed more than 1,100. It was the deadliest garment industry accident in modern history” (NY Times) “The Bangladesh apparel industry had also been rife with sweatshops-among the grimmest ever, anywhere-and with them come industrial accidents.” (NY Times) #ranaplaza #fastfashionsucks #questionyourclothes #TheUglySideofFashion #hunterusf

Heja.

Don’t forget about cotton farmers! It’s not just the making of your clothes that are unethical but the growing of the materials too! In 2004, 18,241 Indian cotton farmers committed suicide. •

It is great to finally see a Bangladeshi voice represented at the @copenhagenfashionsummit - this was something that was noticeably missing from last year’s schedule. @mostafizuddin laid down some real truths that needed to be heard. He spoke about issues affecting the people making garments in Bangladesh and other countries where workers are exploited, rather than focusing on sharing hashtags and public image for brands. He needs to be on every panel! This is the real fashion revolution #realfashionrevolution #sustainablefashion #sustainability #copenhagenfashionsummit2018 #mostafizuddin #fashion #ranaplaza #underrepresentedvoices #moreofthisnextyearplease

About transparency: "We can't fix what we can't see", says @orsoladecastro. The #fashionrevolution movement has been pushing for increased #transparency in the global #fashion industry since the #RanaPlaza tragedy, for example by encouraging people to ask #whomademyclothes - which in turn triggered another movement' among factory workers saying #imadeyourclothes . 😊🌍🌷 #cfs2018, #CopenhagenFashionSummit, #globalfashionagenda

I'm actually SO late in sharing this but only now taking the time out to appreciate how exciting it was to host my first @galdemzine event on a subject very close to my heart – *in my deepest glamorous voice* sustainableee fassshunnnnn – with an insane panel of real game changers at @beyondretro Dalston ✨ was a blessing to be enlightened (and have my faith in humanity restored) by the incredible women behind @fortielabel @hanger_inc @_suchafan @birdsonglondon and hearing how real change is being implemented across the supply chain by such influencing brands and designers who understand being styled to the utmost fleeeeekiest doesn't have to mean comprising on ethics. Was also during @fash_rev's #FashionRevolutionWeek on an especially poignant day marking the 5 year anniversary since the horrifying Rana Plaza disaster in Savar Upazilla, Bangladesh. As it brought mainstream attention to various incidents and atrocities so well ingrained within the fashion industry, it felt right to focus an event paying homage to the ways in which the fashion industry can make ethical fashion mainstream. Check out the @dazed coverage of these boss women's (@essiebuckman @nothanksm8 @sophie_avalon @ibiyecamp) takes on sustainable fashion via Dazed Digital website, titled 'How to get into ethical fashion, according to four labels already doing it' 😎👗👘👚👖👕

Therefore, this blog post will be a short summary of two important things that's been happening while I've been away reading pedagogy literature. 🌸🌎💚 Link in bio! #ranaplaza  #ranaplazaanniversary  #ranaplazaneveragain  @framtidenivarehender #clothing  #clothingindustry  #ethicalliving  #transparency  #bangladeshaccord  #ikea  @ikeanorge #whomademyclothes  @fash_rev #talanoadialogue  #unfccc  #sb48  #talanoa4ambition  #sb48bonn  #bonn  #climatechange  #climate  #climateagreement  #parisagreement  @climatetracker

This is the piece I grab every time I am running out to grab a coffee or meet the girls. Why? Because it’s the perfect size. My phone, lipstick, keys and 3 cards slide perfectly inside. The bad news...this little gem is almost sold out. We only have a couple left in Scotch and Midnight Black. Grab yours now if you want to avoid the tears. I can highly recommend it.

This is the start to educate consumers to make ethical and thoughtful decisions when they purchase their goods, and to remind them that we are wearing the souls of people who made our clothes.

This advertisement was curated in response to the Rana Plaza collapse, and other worker’s rights violation cases that have been emerging in the media and the fashion industry. These issues are overlooked far too often in this industry. Therefore, I wanted to create further awareness of what is going on behind the scenes before the clothes reach the shop floor.

• 📷 shot, styled, curated: @erin___park • 💃🏻: @leah.hoy #nooneshoulddieforfashion #whomademyclothes #sustainability #fashion #photography #theclearcompany #advertising #newvogue #workersrights #ranaplaza #fashionrevolution

“Posting these pictures makes my heart break but we must remember why we have this @fash_rev movement for a fairer, cleaner, more transparent fashion industry. In this day 5 years ago, the Rana Plaza garment factory complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1138 people, injuring about 2,500 more. These images show the devastation. The first one, by photographer Rohat Ali Rajib is of victims’ families holding up photos of their lost loved ones. The images of the labels, by Rashed Shumon, and scissors, by Khorshed Alam Rinku, bring the reality of the detritus into sharp relief - and show the connection with brands and clothes in our stores. The gutwrenching image of the graves, by Indraji Ghosh, shows where victims who could not be indentified ended up. So much sadness, but out of this we can & must build a different future. #fashionrevolutionweek #whomademyclothes : @mrspress #ranaplaza #ethicalfashion #sustainablefashion #fashion #ecofashion
