Thursday 24th May:
As the weather turned drizzly and chilly today, I planned to undertake a simple nature study on plants and photosynthesis, utilising Arabella Buckley's book and a short wander around our damp garden looking for leaf specimens. This was a great success but while sitting in our conservatory recording the finds in our nature journals, we were treated to an additional nature study on the feeding of hungry, noisy starling fledglings! A group of around eight adult and young birds arrived in our garden, some taking from our feeders, others enjoying the offerings of our lawn and shrubs. We observed the young with their mouths wide open, looking bigger than their parent birds who were flying here and there to bring food to their demanding offspring! It was so wonderful to lose track of time watching them and the young one was inspired to record it in her nature journal. Some internet research informed us that groups of young starlings stay together after their parents no longer feed them, which we found rather interesting and endearing.
The "Here Come" Nature books by Alice E. Goudey (GOW dee) are simply delightful! These are life-cycle stories that are informative and engaging to read, with wonderful illustrations by Garry MacKenzie.
Quite a few of these are at Unicorn status, while some are still fairly affordable. However, we know that these are out there in the wild, and we want you to be aware of them and grab them when you can!
Four of the titles are available on internet archive as well.
