#IGtakeover 4/5: Julian Abraham ‘Togar’, Diabethanol (2018). Mixed media installation. Variable dimension

DIABETHANOL is an artistic project that begins with the curiosity of converting diabetic urine into a renewable energy source—bioethanol. The idea derives from an Indonesian saying, “Mengambil kesempatan dalam kesempitan” which can be translated into something like ‘take a chance in a tide’. The saying is actually neutral. It can be used both in a positive and a negative condition. In a negative manner, the phrase is used for people who are benefiting out of someone else’s difficult situation. In a positive manner, the phrase means ‘make best out of something’. @julian_abraham “Togar” (b. Medan, IDN, 1987) is an artist, musician and pseudo scientist. Words like generative, manipulating, dematerialization are often used to identify his work. Connecting one thing to another, expressed in complex algorithms, have enabled his experiences in how art, the environment, science and technology relate to one another to provide new tools to educate and engage both the artist and the society.

DIABETAHNOL was commisioned by the Biennale of Sydney @mami_kataoka_2018 with generous assistance from the Australia-ASEAN Council and the Australia-Indonesia Institute of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Image credit: Silversalt photography.

#IGtakeover 2/5 Irwan Ahmett, Micro Tropical Traffic Island, 2018, cell phone video, looped.

A spontaneous intervention in the middle of the traffic jam in the rush hour in Central Jakarta (after accidentally seeing a cinematic coconut tree in the middle of a chaotic, another paradoxical paradise), filmed by Tita Salina, 8 Feb 2018

@irwanahmett (born 1975 in West Java, based in Jakarta) uses art to illuminate social issues and question the nature of human interactions. He describes his interactive urban interventions as followed: “I often make social campaigns independently, through communicative strategy and a playful visual arts approach. As with fun activities, art would be able to touch the emotions especially when it is able to engage the public directly into the creative process so that it could provide a real experience”. Irwan Ahmett often works together with his partner, Tita Salina. Their works have been exhibited within Indonesia and throughout Europe and Asia. They have participated in projects and artist residences in Indonesia, Singapore, the Netherlands, Poland, USA, and Germany. Both artists live and work in Jakarta, Indonesia where they design projects that focus on social issues in the local area. Irwan Ahmett has participated in the Yogyakarta Biennial 2015, where he presented a work in which he explored a historical, 17th century trade agreement between the VOC and the Mataram Kingdom of Solo and Yogyakarta, an agreement that still persists in many ways today.

#IGtakover 1/5: Bagus Purwoadi Arianto, Great Expectations, 2018

GREAT EXPECTATIONS is a notion of critique towards the idealized paradise that oftentimes are assumed as coming from the gaze of the foreigners, the Others. It's background is one of the iconic landscape painting of Abdullah Soeriosoebroto (1879-1941), meanwhile the woman came from the painting of Sudarso (1914/1916-2006). The innocent look is typically associated to the public's understanding of how a Javanese woman should appear in public, especially to people from a higher social hierarchy. She is dressed in a casual outfit consisting of 'kebaya' (top) and 'jarik' (bottom). “Aku dude pie?" Literal translation: "What should I do?"
Context: The question is posed in a conversational tone using the lowest level of Javanese language.

Bagus Purwoadi Arianto is a lecturer at the Institut Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Arts Institute) where he graduated from. He specializes in basic drawing, art history of Indonesia, and fine art studies. He is also an editor for the Pusat Kajian Narasi Visual (Visual Narrative Studies Center) and its journal, Warna. His visuals can be seen in @baguspurwoadi and his essays in journal.senirupaikj.ac.id and komarbinsyueb.tumblr.com

Hello World. Revising a Collection
.
Agan Harahap
.
We are excited to announce that one of our artists, Agan Harahap will be exhibiting at Hello World. Revising a Collection at Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum fĂŒr Gegenwart - Berlin, curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers.
.
The opening reception will be on Friday, 27 April 2018, 8pm
.
The exhibition takes the works from the collection of the Nationalgalerie as starting points for exploring the question: What might the collection look like today if the museum hadn’t collected its works based almost exclusively or primarily on the developments and trends of modernity and modernism in Germany, Western Europe and North America? The main focus of this exhibition will span the early 20th century until the early 1970s with some additional more recent art works. Within the exhibition space, “Hello World” will integrate several distinct thematic focal points that will explore specific moments of artistic interaction in depth.

Regram from @artpress_uteweingarten „Hello World. Revising a Collection“
What could the collection look like today, had an understanding characterised its concept of art, and consequently also its genesis, that was more open to the world? How might the canon and the art historical narratives themselves have changed?
Preceding the the exhibition of the same name at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Udo Kittelmann and his team of curators will shed light on forgotten connections and discuss how the untold storys of non-european artistical positions might have shaped todays art canon.

Regram from @artpress_uteweingarten „Hello World. Revising a Collection“ What could the collection look like today, had an understanding characterised its concept of art, and consequently also its genesis, that was more open to the world? How might the canon and the art historical narratives themselves have changed? Preceding the the exhibition of the same name at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Udo Kittelmann and his team of curators will shed light on forgotten connections and discuss how the untold storys of non-european artistical positions might have shaped todays art canon. __________ Photo: Tita Salina 1001st Island – The Most Sustainable Island in Archipelago, 2015 (Still) HD-video, color, audio, 14‘ 11“ @ Loan from the artist curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers @bibliothekswohnung ____________________________ #uraniaberlin  #hamburgerbahnhof #staatlichemuseenzuberlin #nationalgalerie  #museumfĂŒrgegenwart #helloworld  #revisingacollection  #berlin #exhibition  #artlovers  #artpress #artpressuteweingarten

On this day in 1928 German artist Otto Piene was born.
Piene was a groundbreaking innovator between art, nature, kinetics and technology. As a founding member of the artist group ZERO he redefined modern art with Heinz Mack and GĂŒnther Uecker starting in 1959, creating unique smoke pictures, fire paintings, light sculptures and light ballets with the help of elementary natural energies. From 1974 to 1994 we was appointed director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Otto Piene died on July 17 2014, after opening his major exhibition “More Sky” at Neue Nationalgalerie and Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin. As a posthumous tribute a monumental Sky Art Event on the roof of Neue Nationalgalerie was held three days later on July 20 which draw thousands of Berliners - Thank you, Otto Piene (MF)
