We’re journeying into our neighboring #mojavetrailsnationalmonument on the road that runs through it: #Route66. Outside #29Palms, Route 66 meets Amboy, the retro “ghost town that ain’t dead yet.” The famous #RoysMotelandCafe, with its Googie-futurist architecture and space-age feel, has long attracted tourists and celebrities. Plan your trip at www.visit29.org. #googie #amboy #futurist #modernist #atomicage #mypubliclands #americana
That line you see in the lower part of the mountain is the road we are traveling on stretched along a extreme dropoff. To explore the Siskiyou Mountains close to Hornbrook California, you can find an amazing number of old logging roads thrpugh out this whole area. Some going back to the Klamath River way down its canyon over 100 miles away through these rugged mountains.

The story wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include something about the cows that strolled through our campsite one evening. Just as the sun started to drop, we heard a few moos and the crunch of the dry, golden grass beneath their feet. I certainly didn’t feel as though the place was overrun by them, and it was one of those photos I never expected to take, but I’m glad I did. However, the bigger question is, what will happen to the ranchers and their livestock if the monument is reduced and/or if the designation is modified? And what are the pros and cons of allowing these animals to graze on these lands, both for the community and the increasing amount of visitors? Food for thought... #mypubliclands

Even in the late afternoon light, the Sacramento River, very close to it's headwaters, flowed beautiful clear blue water and a myriad of deep forest colors. Even the rocks seemed happy to be part of this beauty. Most people in N. California know this famous river as a huge river that flows through the Central Valley giving life to all the agriculture establishments. Everything from fruit, citrus, almonds, olives, walnuts, and everything in between, the Sacramento is considered the lifeblood of N. California. What most people don't know about is where the headwaters of this river begins and the beautiful Shasta Trinity National Forest that protects this important source of water. Do you know where your watersheds begin.

For the past three years, graduate students with the North Cascades Institute have recorded data on the phenologies of local native plants. Phenology is the timing of annual cycles in the natural world, like when plants flower or certain birds start singing. Check out our latest blog post (link in bio) on, “Why phenology matters” by graduate student Brendan McGarry.

When the ranger (and lots of websites) said that Jordan Hot Springs is super popular (avoid it like the plague during spring break), we expected to share the springs with at least a few folks.
.
On our last three miles we came across three backpackers heading out. Even though there were already two people at the springs when we arrived, we managed to snag the sweet campsite right above the springs. Two additional hikers came by shortly after. But within two hours we realized everyone was gone and we had the whole place to ourselves! We were ecstatic. Our first backpack trip to a hot spring a win!
.
But, I gotta ask - does anyone know what’s up with this bacteria in certain hot springs that’ll give you meningitis if you swallow the water? There were warnings for this spring, but the ranger said they’ve never actually tested the water. Jerud’s semi-convinced it’s BS and just a way to minimize the amount of people who visit hot springs. I just made sure to keep my mouth shut.

Few places in this world are more dangerous than home. Fear not, therefore, to try the mountain passes. They will kill care, save you from deadly apathy, set you free, and call forth every faculty into vigorous, enthusiastic action.

Last week we wrapped up the Utah leg on what we have been calling the ‘SW Road Trip.’ Both myself, @Im_NicoleMarie (founder, Women Who Hike) and trip partner, @ElisabethOnTheRoad are here in the Southwest for another month or so, exploring our public lands. On our list is 10 National Monuments, and several other public lands which includes a few of our National Parks and Forests.
Why are we doing this?
To call attention to why these places matter, what we can do to preserve and protect them and also look into what the future holds for some of these places, like Bears Ears National Monument, pictured here.
Over the next month we’ll be traveling into New Mexico, Arizona and then California to document, share and eventually show all of what we discovered via photo, video and a few blogs that each of us will write during and after this adventure wraps. If you’re interested in public lands, I encourage you to follow along with us both over the next month:

Alpine glow on Mt. Shasta. This is the first time I saw glow on the bottom of this mountain and surrounding mounds. Taken from I 5, we stopped the car and pulled over to see what would happen next. After about 10 minutes the sky lit up as well as the ground got dark. Wild. N. California adventures.

Ever feel like you zigged when you wanted to zag? I’ve felt like that a lot over the years. But I think a lot of that comes from comparison to my so-called peers. And as my man Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”
So with that I say zigzag all you want and find your own path to happiness. Maybe it’s confirmation bias, but I’m certainly happy with how my wayward wanderings have led me!

Beach camping is really awesome...in theory. Falling asleep to the sound of water, walking around the campsite barefoot, having soft ground beneath your tent at night...all sound fantastic. Having sand infiltrate absolutely everything you bring along, no matter how hard you try to protect items, and never being able to get that sand out is not so fantastic. That single con outweighs all of the pros for me.

This night was spent camping among some of the tallest trees in the world. I’m still finding sand in my backpack months later.

Just got back from a chill camping trip with @jeremyjanusphotography and @drodphoto (can you find them in this photo?). To avoid the storms in Denver, we headed out to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which left me breathless, figuratively and literally. Since I live at sea level, altitudes like this are new to me and my lungs. I am slowly heading back to San Diego over the next few days and plan on dropping my Capitol Reefs National Park and Valley of Fire State Park, as well as Mystic Hot Springs. As with every roadtrip, this one has been much too short. Maybe I’ll see you on the road!

Majestic Mt. Shasta in all it's wonder in Shasta City of N. California. This incredible mountain, at 14,179 ft. is the second highest peak in the rugged Cascades. Known in the Karuk language as
Uytaahkoo or White Mountain, this mountain is a stratovolcano and is active. The last eruption was in 1786. The first reportedly land sighting of Mt. Shasta by someone other than the Native Tribes of the area, was by a European American, Peter Skene Ogden of the Hudson Bay Company with headquarters in London. Beginning in the 1820s, Mt. Shasta was a prominent landmark along what became known as the Siskiyou Trail. This route was on an ancient trade route of Native American footpaths between California Central Valley and the Pacific Northwest.

The Trinity River watershed in the Shasta Trinity National Forest in N. California. A few places along this 7000 ft view down into the Trinity Alps, you could catch glimpses of the Trinity River. This year we were blessed with snow again and rain. Without these elements even wild rivers like the Trinity would turn to puddles, as I witnessed first hand only a few years ago during the long drought here. Grateful for our Mother Earth.

When I got a text from @emrow5 (who we met while backpacking at White Sands) recommending this great backpacking trip to a hot spring that they just did, this scenery was the last thing I expected.
.
The trail took us through a small, tight canyon before we crossed the river and got engulfed by these huge walls on all sides.
.
Turns out there’s more than just cliff dwellings in this area.

Where I stood near the edge of the cliff, the wind hits you, reminding you to get extra grip from your feet through the soles of your sneakers before losing balance into a world of vertigo. The howling wind swirls against the canyon, vibrating the ground beneath your feet. Your heart pumps faster and faster as adrenaline of fight-or-flight arise. Only to realize past comprehension that this place is transcendental.

In many parts of the country, it’s rare to catch a glimpse of a bald eagle, but imagine seeing scores of them in a single day. Welcome to Lake Coeur d’Alene in the winter! With a plentiful supply of spawned-out kokanee salmon, this lake is a favorite wintering spot for eagles. From November to February each year, the Bureau of Land Management records the eagle migration -- a record 240 eagles were spotted in just one day in 2013. The spectacle becomes a regional attraction, with activities, tours and boat rides on the lake. Apparently all the flooding around Montana freaked out Smith River floaters last week. For the first time in a decade we were able to camp at Rock Creek- one of our faves... and saw literally 3 other trips on the water. Feeling like the May Smith trips of yesteryear. Brilliant. It would be nothing short of a national travesty to start mining on the headwaters of this spectacular river treasure. #saveoursmith #nosmithrivermine @publiclandownersunited #plou #publiclands #keepitpublic #publiclandsproud #yourpubliclands #mypubliclands #streamaccess #holdourground #publiclandsinpublichands #belowthehighwatermark @backcountryhunters @nationalparkalliance @montanatu @thetrcp @rmef @keep_it_public @usinterior @montanastateparks @backcountryhunters_mt @mypublicland @artemis_sportswomen @brownpeoplecamping @outdoorindustry
