We're back with another fact file and today we're focusing on the utterly unique Class 73!
The Class 73 is an unusual electro-diesel locomotive, that can operate from 660/ 750V DC 3rd rail or an onboard diesel engine to give it the versatility to run on routes away from the 3rd rail network. The 73 is effectively a precursor to newer "bi-modal" technology as seen in the Class 88 and Class 800. The class have been used by a whole host of operators since privatisation and are still heavily used across the network to this day.

"I believe that as we create our alternate realities, our layouts really need to address the human dimension that ostensibly created those scenarios in the first place. What if we lived in their world? What would our daily activities be like? Would you be the railroad’s president, or maybe the town’s mayor? How about a civil engineer or a town planner?" -Doug Hodgdon
