6Nov2017: I passed by the historic Argo Mine a couple of weeks ago and it reminded me of Colorado's Mineral Belt, a 30-mile wide, 300-mile long underground cache stretching from Silverton in San Juan County to Gold Hill in Boulder County. Some mining is still going on, but most Colorado mines closed decades ago when the gold and silver boom faded. The only thing Argo mines now is tourism.
Dirt biking to some Colorado relics, old diesel shovel maybe? (Actually it looks like a drag line for working with the looser stuff like the flats out here.) @bobba_lu. #cugeology#gold#silver#mineralbelt
One of my favorite places..... ✨Biking the mineral belt trail 10,000 feet above sea level. Takes my breath away (both physically and aesthetically....). Along this 12 ish mile paved bike path you can see astounding visuals as well as remains of old mining towns.
It's been raining a lot so the mountain wildflowers are abundant and sooooo beautiful.
Can't keep myself from collecting them to admire them up close and personal -sigh-......
Dun Mountain Walkway, halfway between Maitai Dam and Coppermine Saddle. The western edge of the mineral belt on Wooded Peak is easily distinguished by the sudden change in vegetation from low scrub to beech forest.
Looking west across Tasman Bay from the summit of Dun Mountain, Nelson. Fringed Hill is straight ahead and you can just make out Port Nelson to the right of it. Dun Mt is a great day walk through the amazing landscape of the mineral belt (the summit is 5-7 hrs return from Maitai Valley road end).
The track to Whispering Falls branches off of Hacket Track. The use of 'falls' in their name is slightly misleading; they are more of a dribble (except after rain), though the misty water droplets and mossy rockface are pretty nonetheless. There's a good picnic spot in the clearing above the falls.
Hacket Track crosses the Dun Mountain ophiolite belt, where outcrops of ultramafic rock rich in minerals like chromite, olivine and serpentine are revealed. This is a really interesting half-day walk within half an hour drive of Richmond.
