Lost in wonder at the Valley of the Kings ✨

So, I'm going to confess I basically did no research for the mainland Egypt part of this trip.
•
The Red Sea bit took way more time and energy to plan than I expected, and so I flew to Egypt knowing essentially nothing about how I'd spend my first ten days. Which for a control freak like me would normally be stressful... but on this trip was a blessing in disguise!

Take the Valley of Kings. I had no idea where we were going or what it would look like when we rolled into Luxor. When my @traveltalktours guide said where we were going I was vaguely picturing someplace in my mind but ha -- I was totally misplacing a different ancient Egyptian site.

Turns out the Valley of the Kings is where the hidden tombs of so many great Egyptian Kings have been uncovered... including our friend King Tut! A general ticket allows you to go in three of the tombs and then you can buy extra tickets to some of the special ones, like King Tut's. Funny enough, our guide told us that really, King Tut is no big deal in Egyptian history -- he's just famous because his was the last tomb to be found, and the only one that appears to have been untouched by tomb looters.

So, part of the reason I probably didn't recognize any of it was because until very recently, all photos were banned at the Valley of the Kings! Now, you just have to buy a photo ticket (which is about double the price of the regular ticket but... worth it!)

Guys. I was BLOWN AWAY! I could not believe how beautiful and intact and colorful and special these tombs were, and that we were walking freely in them! My favorite part of the day? Learning that there is STILL one King of Egypt who's tomb has yet to be discovered. I got chills just thinking about it! How exciting would it be if they found it in our lifetime?

Pretty much every dang day, Egypt has impressed me... (except for the wifi 😂)

First flight on a hot air balloon and so fascinated to see how they got everything up and flying. What a spectacular view to behold from above, where the landscape slowly shifted from stretches of sandy desert to the emerald Nile river to lush plantations and Lego-like houses.
