Repost @nativealawa Indigenous languages are spoken in all regions of Canada. There are over 60 distinct Indigenous languages in Canada, falling into 10 separate language families. While in many places there has been decreased transmission of languages from one generation to the next, recognition of this has led to efforts by Indigenous peoples to revitalize and sustain their languages. Canada, and North America more generally, represent a highly complex linguistic region, with a large number of languages and great linguistic diversity. Indigenous languages are spoken widely, and are official languages in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, while the Yukon recognizes the significance of the Indigenous languages of the territory.
Indigenous languages are struggling to survive. With the number of Indigenous language speakers on the decline, some of these languages are on the verge of completely disappearing. Many of Canada’s Indigenous languages, such as Oneida, Cayuga, and Seneca, are estimated to have less than one hundred speakers. But, due to an increasing awareness of Indigenous people and the importance of their culture and language in Canada, Indigenous language revitalization efforts are being made to keep these languages alive.
There are many opportunities and Elders in your area to learn the languages. Do you want to practice Woodland Cree, Plains Cree, Swampy Cree and/or Dene? Try these vocabulary exercises from 'The Gift of Language and Culture': http://ow.ly/DpCF30gva3H

Words of wisdom from Gerald Auger...The word “WARRIOR” is a great descriptive word for a hero. A person with great vigor & courage. One that learns from the past, focuses on the now yet prepares for the future. A person of resilience whose actions reflect a deep-rooted belief that everyone is valuable. They are people who puts others first – a hero is someone who uses their gifts & abilities to make a positive change in themselves and others.

In 2004, supporters of former president Hugo Chavez of Venezuela torned down a Christopher Colombus statue which had remained untouched for over a century and replaced it with a statue of Indigenous leader Cacique Guaicaipuro.

Indigenous people represent about 1.5 percent of the total population of Venezuela, including at least 26 nationalities; the Ya̧nomami, Pemon, Warao people, Baniwa people, Kali'na people, Motilone Bari, Ye'kuana, and Yaruro and etc. In 2002, the South American nation began to celebrate October 12 as the Day of Indigenous Resistance.

May your rest in peace with all of our ancestors, Elder Maestra Olivia Arevalo was shot 5 times in the heart and killed by Sebastian Woodroffe on Thursday, April 19th. Sebastian Woodroffe was a white canadian who was trying to become a shaman trying to learn our ways and find his inner peace. Sebastian Woodroffe was later lynched and killed by the community, his body was found buried near the area.

Maestra Olivia Arevalo was a recognized leader in her community known for her defense of cultural rights for the Shipibo Konibo indigenous community. The community is now DEMANDING the state commit to protecting other Indigenous Leaders, we ask for you all to help share this news so that it is known that indigenous leaders are at risk in Peru, just like in many other parts of the world.

Love live Elder, Maestra Olivia Arevalo.

Brayden Bushbys aggravated assault charge was dropped and moved up to second degree murder. Bushby is currently out on bail until the trial next month.
Realistically he should be facing a first degree murder charge, he knew what he was doing. He understood what he was doing. He is not a "thoughtless child", he is a violent murderous racist. He and his peers thought of throwing objects at indigenous people from moving vehicles as some kind of sick game. He was heard yelling "I got one!" and laughing after he threw the hitch. This was an act of colonial violence. Thunder Bay is a city where the indigenous population are thought of as lesser than. In these hard times the native community in Thunder Bay have proven to be united and strong of heart. As native people we will continue to fight for justice for and to end violence against Indigenous people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kentner family, although her life could never be replaced, there is relief to see some form of justice being served.

{Glacier National Park originally posted by @glaciernp - post 1/2 looking at the tribes of Glacier National Park} Straddling the Rocky Mountains in northern Montana, Glacier National Park was carved out of the ceded land of several different Native Nations, the largest of which is the Blackfeet Nation. The Blackfeet homeland includes the eastern half of Glacier and much of the Montana plains. Despite being confined to a reservation as the result of several treaties with the U.S., the Blackfeet did not give up resource rights to their ceded land, which means, legally, the Blackfeet have overlapping resource jurisdiction in much of Glacier National Park. Conflicts stemming from these overlapping jurisdictions are common on public land throughout the U.S., often the result of different conceptions of land and property both at the time of the treaties and in the present. The Blackfeet in Glacier are no different and despite fighting to greater power in the management of the park’s resources, the Blackfeet are still barred from fully exercising their treaty rights in their homeland.

From the wise Two-spirit @indigenousunity - There are so many other terms not here, not just tribes but other things we are called. Mestizo, Nican Tlaca, Spic, Hebrew, Moor, Israelite, Pocho, Joto, Xicanx etc. I know of some Mexicans (mestizx) who say the only reason they’re native is because they have a little Apache blood in them. I know of people who claim Mexica (Aztec) or Maya when in reality they come from a different group. My mother claims Cherokee for her native identity, while she’s Mestiza Mexican American. The video I posted a week ago of the brown/indigenous people in Mexico calling themselves white black and Asian because they don’t realize their roots and history.
Some of these terms are derogatory while others are being reclaimed. Some of the terms homogenize us, others were created for a sense of unity. If we disagree with our people who may use or identify with one of these terms, all we can do is educate them about why. We still should show support and inclusiveness to our people whether they realize they are native or not. Which is why I still follow people that use the terms Hispanic and Latino. Self identity takes time to develop and growing up believing one thing can be challenging to undo. I think the fastest most efficient way to expedite this in our community is to bridge the gaps of knowledge and understanding between natives above and below the Mexican/US border.

Shortly after I graduated from college in 2006 and upon my Abuelas passing, I remember my father saying “You know what, your Abuela was from the north, her ancestors likely came from the jungle” I grew up immersed in highland Andino folk art and music, but when I started peering into the jungle after my Abuelos passed on, my whole vision and place came into clarity. I became so drawn to Pablo Amaringo and wanted to go to his Painting school in the Jungle to study with him. In my research at that time I came across a brand new temple dedicated to the divine feminine with indigenous women healers as the primary leaders, and #maestraolivia was working with Temple of the Way of Light. My understanding of the world expanded exponentially. She and the jungle shook me. I tried to find any icaros I could of her and the curanderas in her circle. I debuted this series in 2012 (this is of @stephenbushman an oracle and amazing beautiful human avatar💕) based alongside many of the principles of plant spirit/visionary communication work, this collection of life size portraits was developed on friends’ auras and flashes of colors and patterns representational to their energy— solely under the influence of my admiration for the power they hold. I am so grateful to have been shifted so much as an artist from just witnessing from afar the magic of the Shipibo-Conibo. I still have never been to the jungle, and have only sat with medicine a few times— but I know and feel the deep seated intention and duality of being a vessel/conduit for speaking with/of the energy of the natural world. It’s an immense loss but a time where we all feel the deep power of the Curanderas whom have shook the western world. Lets try and honor them the best we can with our stories and their impact. Let’s please find swift justice for Maestra Olivia and find the person who took our precious Elder. #justiciaparaolivia #oliviaarevelo #maestraolivia #shipibo #divinefemininerising #indigenousunited #earthday

You are worth every prayer whispered by your ancestors. You are what your ancestors prayed for. You are the resistance, you are your ancestors wildest dreams. You are hope made flesh. You are the culture, nothing moves without you. Children of the sun, brown is beautiful. 9RA!

Shipibo Maestra Olivia Arevalo was murdered yesterday in Peru. She was shot in the heart. Maestra Olivia was a healer working with plant spirit medicines, using her soul filled voice, her power and beauty, to transform and make well the living creatures around her and the planet itself. My heart is filled with sadness today that such a woman could be violently stolen from this world. Shine on, beautiful one! #Neverforget #MaestraOlivia #indigenousrising #divinefeminineenergyrising #Shipibo #indigenousunited #protectourindigenouswomen #protectourindigenoushealers #curandera #curanderasrising #lovewillprevail #mayjusticebeserved

{Iditarod National History Trail originally posted by US Interior} The annual Iditarod Dog Sled Race is currently underway in Alaska! Known as an important dog sled trail during the Alaska gold rush and the famous “Great Race of Mercy” when medicine for diphtheria was taken to the children of Nome, the trail was originally a dogsled and snowshoe trail created by Alaska Natives to connect a number of interior villages. It goes through the land of the Dena’ina, Deg Hit’an, Inupiaq, and Yup’ik people and the word Iditarod comes from the Deg Xinag word hidedhod meaning distant place.
