Detective Comics issue 736 marked Bane's first appearance in "No Man's Land!" It had been a while since Bane had popped up in the comics, and he had previously been seen working as an ally of Ra's al Ghul. After he hears that Gotham was decimated by an earthquake, though, Bane steals a van and plows through the military barricade segregating the city from the outside world...all in the name of declaring himself king in a newly lawless world and carving out his own territory. Naturally he comes into contact with Batman and they have two beatdowns - one in the sewers and one in a warehouse - and the pair spend an awful lot of time talking as they fight. Bane in particular brags about how he beat his Venom addiction and is a new man, which is something he enjoyed ranting about during this era. Bane eventually gets Bats to leave him alone by mentioning that he rigged an explosive beneath a soup kitchen, and when Batman runs off to disable it Bane gloats and thinks about how Gotham's just ripe for the taking. The fight scene art by Mike Deodato is quite good here but Larry Hama's script leaves something to be desired - Larry's a longtime comic scribe but I feel like the Batman books of this era were moving away from the "let's chat a lot and make one-liners as we punch each other" style of comic writing that was big in the early to mid 90s, especially in Marvel's stuff like the X-Men books and G.I. Joe, which is where Larry did most of his work.

So I’ve just had, without a doubt, the best weekend ever! On Saturday, I went to Comic-Con and met Tom Ellis (Lucifer) who was so lovely and called me honey! I then met Felicia Day (Charlie Bradbury from Supernatural) who again was lovely and made me smile! Today I went to Heroes and Villains Fan Fest and met Cory Michael Smith (Ed “The Riddler” Nygma from Gotham) who gave me lots of hugs because I was a nervous wreck and also recommended that I read the Riddle Factory because it was his idea to use it for an episode of Gotham so naturally I’m going to read it! And finally, I met Tyler Hoechlin (Derek Hale from Teen Wolf) who is the most wonderful human being ever! He called me sweetie and was such a sweetheart when he saw that I was nervous. The camera film broke when I went up to see him so I got to spend longer with him while they fixed it, and we laughed about it together which was so amazing! Honestly think I’m going to wake up soon and none of this is going to have been real! Thank you so much to everyone involved! #tomellis#lucifer#savelucifer#feliciaday#charliebradbury#supernatural#spn#corymichaelsmith#ednygma#theriddler#gotham#tylerhoechlin#derekhale#teenwolf
