Its funny to me when people hate on the fatbike. They say it has no place on dirt. They call it slow. They even accuse it of being a fad.
Well, first off, I hate to break it to you, but it's as slow as you make it. Yeah, it's a you problem. I can RIP downhill on this guy, stay right with the guys on full-sus or often pass them... Oh, and climbing? Yeah, they climb like no other.
Of course, it's terrain dependant. If you're on flat, buff midwest cornfields, yeah, I can see why your 29er hardtail works great. But I've logged thousands of miles on multiple fatbikes, in every season, all over the place from Arizona to Kansas to North Dakota to Idaho.
I've been told they're terrible for bikepacking... Of course by dudes who don't have a single bikepacking photo posted.... Or perhaps their version of "bikepacking" is a car-supported vacation on the Kokopelli, carrying nothing but the water they'll need for a few hours, maybe some snacks. That's cute.
So keep on discrediting my choice of bike. But when you're willing to open your mind, take a look at a few of my photos from adventures — you'll see I get around and do far better than managin' jus' fine.
Furthermore, this isn't to say YOU need a fat bike. I have just found that they fit my personal style of riding and offer a lot of versatility. Ride whatever you have. Don't let the gear limit the adventures and don't let your fears dictate your mindset.
This one looks like a blast! The organizers suggest a fat tired bike but we’re bringing our cross bikes. Details below and on FB. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SAND BLASTER 2018 April 28
Lap format bike race in the sand box north of Dripping Springs and west of Sonoma Ranch. Be prepared for ~5 miles of MAXIMUM EFFORT on sandy double track with fast descents and steep climbs. All bikes welcome, but sand is in the name so expect to do less pushing on fat tires. There will be Fat and Skinny champions.
You are encouraged to ride your bike to the meeting location, but there is room for street parking if you need to drive.
Show up at the meeting spot at 7PM. We can mill around and wait for the inevitable stragglers, but fun pace course pre-ride will leave at 7:15. Sunset is at 7:46PM The "pre-race social hour" (light refreshments will be provided, but BYO is always encouraged) will then commence until we deem the moon light bright enough to start the main event.
Following the race and award ceremonies, "tasteful victory celebrations" will be enjoyed by all in attendance. If you are inclined to bring your bed roll and stay all night, go for it.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING: Bike, tools, water, lights. Food and drink to suit your needs. Anything else you might want for a night in the desert.
WHAT WE WILL PROVIDE: Fun times, prizes, 5 gallons of beer, bitter and unusual liquers.
