This portrait is piece of the project about the impact of free English classes on the life and integration of refugees from Afghanistan and Central Asia in London through people’s stories.
“Some of the women need English for specific areas in their life. There’s a woman that came to our classes and basically specifically wanted support with being able to pass her driving theory test. In the last couple of months or so, when she had lessons, she would just go in a corner of the classroom and would be studying this with one extra person and specific material. Passing that theory test means being able to have that independence. She wasn’t born in England but when she came to the UK she was in her early teens, and her mother is also in the class. She has one of the lower levels of English, but you can just see that she’s so dedicated to improving her language and how she’s willing to put herself out there and really try, and then her daughter is in the corner studying English to pass the driving theory test. Being able to offer that is just an amazing thing. Teaching English to these women has an impact on her families and community as well, to have that normal functionality that we all take for granted sometimes. It’s truly amazing how our classes are empowering the women in different generations.” Volunteer English teacher. .
