We may not have blooms ready for Valentine's Day, but we do have Gift Cards available for you to give your Love for a truly special gift. If you do want to give arranged fresh flowers, we do suggest going to your local florists- many of which have designs made with local blooms. #insistonlocal #slowflowers #valentinesday #localmeanslocal #salemcounty #salemcountynj #certifiedamericangrown #americangrown #instagood
This week's #stateflowerfriday is a fitting edition with Valentine's Day on the horizon next week. Who knows what the numbers truly are, but I'd say that this next week could be called "the week of the Rose". 🌹🌹🌹 Which brings us to the state of New York! A rose of any color will do in NY, while Georgia, Iowa and North Dakota have specified varieties and will have their own day in the sun. School kids voted on a state flower in 1890, where goldenrod actually won, but the rose wasn't officially adopted until 1955. New York might have been a bit of a late bloomer (heh heh..) in naming a state flower, but they picked a good one. Roses have been around for about 35 million years and are one of the most widely cultivated flower crops worldwide. Roses grow well across North America but are particularly verdant in the Hudson Valley where tours of rose gardens on historic estates such as a Vanderbilt mansion which boasts a circular rose garden with over 1200 plants. Cultivated as far back as the Egyptians, the rose is also the national floral emblem of the United States. There are 35 varieties of native roses that grow in the US and thousands of hybrids and cultivars available.
The rose family includes delights such as apples, pears, almonds, cherries, strawberries and apricots so it should come as no surprise that you can eat most of the plant. Rose hips have one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C occurring naturally in a plant. Rose water and essential oil have been used as a scent, in cooking and as medicine for centuries. A tincture of the petals can treat sore throats, fevers, stomach distress and be used as a mild astringent. The Chippewas of the Great Lakes Region treated cataracts with the inner bark of the root. Almost all women's perfume starts with true Bulgarian rose oil base, made from the petals of the Damask rose which only blooms for two weeks a year.
Roses are also the 15th wedding anniversary flower and the June birthday flower. And they're just about everywhere! I do not grow roses in my garden but if you have a friend who does, then you know what an art form it can be to cultivate them. Love em? Hate em? Grow em? Shout out below! 🌹🌹

This year we’ve been spreading the #SlowFlowers message to anyone that will listen. In all of our workshops and at every new client consultation, we start by stressing why we choose to buy local, America grown flowers. Origin matters and the industry is beginning to make it easier to shop intentionally. I️ spotted these two stickers identifying #cagrown and #certifiedamericangrown at Trader Joe’s. Expect to see more of this labeling in the years to come.
Have you seen this labeling anywhere? Do you find this messaging helpful when you’re at the checkout?

100% #americangrown ❤️this was the first time I had designed with 100% American grown flowers and foliage when I was designing the mockup for the @congressionalclub annual First Lady's Luncheon. I've always been a big #locallygrown flowers supporter and buyer but knowing the origin of my other flowers, not as much embarrassingly. It was the most impactful experience to date and I realized I had so much to learn - about the farms themselves, about what, when and how they grow and about all the variety we take for granted and don't educate ourselves about. This entire experience, being apart of @americangrownflowers mission to bring their flowers to DC and shine awareness on the movement has rocked my world and I'm so happy! We didn't grow as many #tulips this year because we lost so many in 2016, as every year is different with how cold our winters can be. We rely on cold winters to help our bulbs get the chill they need for long stems. This year was fair to middlin for coldness and the amount we grew is enough to quench the #tulip thirst. Pulled these ahead of the rain coming tomorrow. Some of these will be mixed with #hellebores for a catering job my sister is doing on Sunday because they are #jerseygrown and #fresh. #proudtofarm #springflowers #spring2017 #jersey #nj #cumberlandcounty #salemcounty #locallygrown #americangrown #certifiedamericangrown #slowflowers #originmatters

Over the last several days I gave some history on why 75% of the flowers sold in the United States are actually grown overseas, our push for tax reform, the importance of immigrant labor on American farms, our push to have the White House use 100% American Grown flowers, and getting our Representatives to join the Congressional Cut Flower Caucus!
As you can see we had an action packed couple or days in D.C. working on behalf of American Flower Growers with our members of Congress and Agency officials. Let me know if you have any questions! I would love to hear your thoughts!

If you are a grower and would like to get involved with Certified American Grown or know how you can contribute to our industry in Washington, please contact me!

If you would like to support American Grown Flowers, you can buy from your local farmer, look for the #certifiedamericangrown label on your flowers at the store, or request that your wholesaler sources your flowers from farms in the USA!

While it is important and productive to advocate for American Grown Flowers for a week each year in Washington DC, after our group leaves we need to assure the continued support of our Representatives. Several years ago the Certified American Grown Flowers program created the 'Congressional Cut Flower Caucus' to help us achieve this goal.

While in DC we asked our members to become a member of the Caucus. Currently, there is a bipartisan group of 27 members and our hope is to double that number by the end of the year.
This group of Representatives and Senators pledges their support on issues affecting American Grown Flowers and participates in 2 or 3 activities each year. The first event we held was reception on March 1st in partnership with the National Wine Institute.

Over the past couple days I gave some history on why 75% of the flowers sold in the United States are actually grown overseas, our push for tax reform, and the importance of immigrant labor on American farms.

Now more than ever there is a movement in our country to push 'American Made' and 'Local' products. Hoping to capture some of this motivation our group of farmers also expressed our desire to have the White House only source American Grown Flowers in their arrangements year round. This would not only highlight the seasonality of flowers but also show the varieties we can grow across the country.

We are not the first to try this kind of thing. In the past, the majority of the wine served at the White House was French. Back in the early 1970's Richard Nixon agreed to highlight American produced wine and is partially credited for domestically produced wine to become the household staple it is today. We hope to have a similar movement start with American Grown Flowers.

Over the past couple days I gave some history on why 75% of the flowers sold in the United States are actually grown overseas and our push for tax reform.

Perhaps the most important thing we talked about was the need for a stable and reliable work force. It is no big secret that American agriculture is heavily depended on immigrant labor. While 99.99% of farmers follow the law when hiring ag employees, many of the people picking our food and flowers are not in the country legally.

Agriculture looks at this issue as a labor problem rather than an immigration issue. Just as much as any other American, our farm families want to keep our country safe and have a secure border. That said, if every illegal immigrant working on American farms was deported, our agricultural supply chains would collapse. Floriculture, more than other parts of ag, is especially dependant on labor as flowers must be harvested by hand.

When in Washington DC we asked that the programs that currently exist such as H2A are streamlined and that we have a way of hiring a steady supply of legal immigrants. The programs that currently exist are often not workable because of the time involved. Many farmers trying to use these programs have had their crops rot in the field because the application process is so long and tedious and there is no labor available.

If you would like to support American Grown Flowers, you can buy from your local farmer, look for the #certifiedamericangrown label on your flowers at the store, or request that your wholesaler sources your flowers from farms in the USA!

In yesterday's post I gave some history on why 75% of the flowers sold in the United States are actually grown overseas.

Part of our message to Congress was to educate them in this history and another part was to talk about what we would like to see done.

It goes without saying that there is a lot of uncertainty in our nation's capitol right now. That said, there is a support forming around the idea of having a border adjust tax charged on imports to the United States. Most countries charge what is called a VAT (value added tax) on all product sold domestically regardless of if it is produced in that country or imported. The USA is one of the few developed countries in the world that does not. When growers from Columbia and Ecuador ship to the USA their country refunds to them this 16% tax effectively allowing them to ship to the United State with out having to pay any taxes on their production - whether business, income, or terifs. This puts them at a further advantage when compared to American Growers.

Our group expressed support in placing this border adjusted tax on flower imports from these two countries as it would put domestic growers on a more level playing field with foreign product and help us be more competitive in our pricing.

Did you know that 75% of the flowers sold in the United States are actually grown overseas?
Back in the early 90s the USA offered financial and technical assistance to farmers in Columbia and Ecuador to help develop a flower industry to reduce the number of farms growing drugs. Back then USA growers grew about 75% of the domestic market share. Due to USA government assistance, vastly lower labor costs (around $250/month), lower environmental standards, and the industry being government subsidized in these countries, today #americangrown flowers only control about 25% of the domestic market share.
For those of you following me, you probably saw I spent a few days down in D.C. with @americangrownflowers and flower farmers from across the country. One of our goals was to educate our members of Congress, their staff, and Agency officials at the USDA about the history of imports and how they have devastated the USA flower industry by 'dumping' their product here in the USA. We also urged them to support policy that would help our domestic industry!
