When it comes to people who have made a sacrifice in their lives for other people, I look at my parents. They chose to adopt me when I was just a baby and if they hadn’t, I don't know how my life would have went. I’ll always be grateful for the sacrifice they made to bring me up and I hope I make them proud.
Looking at Dundee and growing up here for more than 20 years, I’ve seen it change and grow. We are positioning ourselves with a strong digital platform and as a hub of creativity. It’s exciting to see.

I grew up in a cottage on the North edge of Dundee with my parents and two older sisters. Next door lived my mother’s parents and next to them was my father’s father. My early years were filled with family get togethers and caravan holidays all over Scotland. Growing up on these holidays really helped me appreciate how beautiful the highlands are! Being with my family is one of the most important things to me – knowing that you’ve always got someone to go to and listen when you need it. I do like living in Dundee. The music scene is great and there are a few good club venues that have recently opened. You are definitely beginning to see the town grow and develop along with the new V&A being built at the waterfront.

I've always been interested in Dundee's cultural and musical heritage, which I think is rarely celebrated. There's a Billy Mackenzie bus route, but nobody is talking about renowned Jazz trumpetist Jimmy Deuchar or the owner of Harry’s New York Bar (frequented by Hemingway and George Gershwin) Harry McElhone, who is said to have invented the Bloody Mary cocktail! I spent a few years in Barcelona when I was younger and I couldn't believe it when I noticed a plaque in front of the McManus commemorating Dundondian men that fought for the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War, like Orwell did. I've always wondered who those guys were and what their story was. Dundee's history is full of hidden gems like these, and with the spotlight on us in the future it'd be good to talk a little about our past as well as present pioneers.
