"Nothing is hidden anymore"
The Aru people live on remote islands in Indonesia. Most Aru villages are coastal, so the people make their living from the sea. Nearly all travel is by boat since there are virtually no roads outside the one town in the islands.
All Aruese claim to be either Christian (about 75%) or Muslim (about 25%).
However, traditional beliefs are still very strongly held in all Aru communities.
Wycliffe supports Bible translation work in two Aru languages: Dobel and Kola.
A large amount of the New Testament and Jonah, Ruth and the Joseph story from Genesis, from the Old Testament, have been translated into Kola.
Christian outreach work has previously been done in the national language and, consequently, many local people think of Christianity as an outside religion.
Most do not see Jesus as someone who understands their own culture and language and with whom they can have a personal relationship.
But God's word is changing hearts. Recently the translation team carried out community checking of five books of the New Testament. These were 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus, locally known as the '5Ts'. One of the community, a lady called, Mrs Lin, was delighted with what she read. She said: 'An ramau tanga yet among its ahpina time, an mau hawing aka Sita.' Which means: 'Nothing is hidden anymore, everything has been revealed to us.' There is hope too that church leaders will read the Dobel Scriptures aloud, be willing to pray in Dobel, and use Dobel for ministry where possible.
Praise God for twelve letters from the New Testament in Dobel being put into a Bible app; Ruth is to be added soon.
Pray for people's ability to accept a new way of 'doing church' through using the local languages
Pray for God to speak through the translations into people's hearts, bringing them close to him.
