Golden Age, 1898

János Vaszary ((Hungarian, 1867–1939) "The emblematic chef d’ouvre of the Hungarian art nouveau, Golden Age was first exhibited in 1898 in Budapest’s Hall of Arts, where it was awarded the grand prize by the National Hungarian Association of Fine Arts. Subsequently, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, the painting earned a bronze medal. The conception of the painting shares affinities with the mixture of symbolism and naturalism that typified the German Jugendstil, and its unique atmosphere and fine sensuality are derived from the duality of traditional academic-type modelling and the contrasting decorativeness. In the foreground of a park fringed by ancient statues – Apollo and Diana – the embracing naked couple are burning their offering to Venus, the goddess of love. The dreamlike atmosphere is generated by the opalescent green colouring of the picture, and by the contrast between the dark green background and the fluorescent figures. The ornately carved frame, also designed by Vaszary, is an integral part of the composition; the art nouveau motif of the painting, the wavy wisps of the smoke of sacrifice, continue to flow and spread across the richly worked ornamentation of the wooden frame."mng.hu

Giacomo Balla - Landscape (c. 1900) - Private Collection
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Painted by the Italian Futurist artist Giacomo Joseph Balla (1871-1958). At age nine, after the death of his father, Balla gave up music and began working in a lithograph print shop. By age 20, his interest in visual art had developed to such a level that he decided to study painting at local academies, and several of his early works were shown at exhibitions. Following academic studies at the University of Turin, Balla moved to Rome in 1895, where he met and later married Elisa Marcucci. For several years he worked in Rome as an illustrator, caricaturist and portrait painter. In 1899, his work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale, and in the ensuing years his art was shown at major exhibitions in Rome and Venice, as well as in Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf, at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, and at galleries in Rotterdam.

Around 1902, he taught Divisionist techniques to Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini. Influenced by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Giacomo Balla adopted the Futurism style, creating a pictorial depiction of light, movement and speed. He was a signatory of the Futurist Manifesto in 1910.

We’re so pleased to have found a friend for Susan (the lady portrait)!
•••••••••••••❤️•••••••••••••••••
We don’t know his name or his story but we liked his countenance so we decided he needed to live with us. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
We don’t know anything about Susan, either, but the name seemed to suit her. This gent seems like he might be a Leo or a Bernard but time will tell.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Not sure where he’ll hang but we are awfully glad to have him. Hopefully our two Victorians will hit it off! Looking forward to researching our gent and seeing what we can learn

GEORGE GOODWIN KILBURNE
(1839 - 1924)
The Saga of John Peel: Yes I Ken John
Oil on panel
15 3/4 x 24 inches
Signed

http://rehs.com/George_Goodwin_Kilburne_The_Saga_of_John_Peel:_Yes_I_Ken_John.html

Devoted English huntsman John Peel was born at Park End, near Caldbeck, Cumberland, in 1776. Peel was an avid huntsman and became a recognized figure during his lifetime as a result of John Woodcock Graves' song D’ye ken John Peel; this popular old English song idealized the sport of hunting for many at that time. Peel died in 1854, possibly due to a fall in a hunting accident and was buried in the churchyard of St. Kentigern's Church, Caldbeck.

“One illusion disappears before another.” — Matthijs Maris
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
Matthias Marris (17 August 1839 – 22 August 1917) was a Dutch painter, etcher and lithographer. He was also known as Matthijs Maris or Thijs. He initially belonged to the Hague School, like his two brothers, Jacob and Willem, but his later works deviated more and more from that school into a unique style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Fairytale-like figures, imposing landscapes and mysterious scenes characterize his work. His eccentric lifestyle and idiosyncratic paintings provided inspiration to young artists, including Vincent van Gogh. Although his work was internationally renowned and commanded record breaking prices, he eventually led a secluded life in his studio.

I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell:
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.
You have been mine before,— How long ago I may not know:
But just when at that swallow's soar
Your neck turn'd so,
Some veil did fall,—I knew it all of yore.
Has this been thus before?
And shall not thus time's eddying flight
Still with our lives our love restore
In death's despite,
And day and night yield one delight once more? •

A piece of ‘Japonistic’ history up for sale! It is a French 19th-century Japanese woodblock collection that is being offered at auction in Paris.
The prints were acquired in the late-19th century by a lawyer who was acquainted with the two leading Japanese art dealers of the time, Siegfried Bing (1838-1905) and Hayashi Tadamasa (1853-1906) and reflects the 19th-century taste for Japanese art in Europe. The collection consisted of some 200 pieces, divided between four heirs when the owner died in 1911. This sale includes 49 prints from the collection, from the 18th and 19th centuries, including works by Utamaro, Sharaku, Harunobu and Hiroshige. #japaneseart #artauction #parissale #ukiyoe #woodblockprint #japaneseprint #utamaro #hiroshige #harunobu #sharaku #19thcenturyart #artcollecting #findesiecle #siegfriedbing #tadamasahayashi #historical #artdealer #japaneseartdealers #japonism #japonisme #japanism #artadvisor #artforsale

Julius Paulsen - Summer Night (c. 1888) - Den Hirschsprungske Samling, Copenhagen, Denmark
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Painted by the Danish Impressionist artist Julius Paulsen (1860-1940). Born in Odense, Paulsen was the son of a shopkeeper. After completing an apprenticeship as a house painter, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1882. In 1885, he travelled to the Netherlands, France and Belgium together with Viggo Johansen.

Paulsen's works bear the influence of Realism, Symbolism and Impressionism but he was also inspired by Dutch 17th century art as can be seen in his painting Portrætgruppe (Portrait Group) from 1902 in Skagens Museum. Paulsen also associated with several of the Skagen Painters who gathered each summer in the north of Jutland but did not visit Skagen itself until after 1900. He painted several portraits of Laurits Tuxen and his family as well as a number of landscapes. His portrait of P.S. Krøyer hangs in the Museum of National History in Frederiksborg Palace.

Winged Figure - 1889

Abbott Handerson Thayer(American, 1849–1921) "This female angel is one of many that Abbott Handerson Thayer painted during his career. Originally a painter of animals, Thayer created portraits and then allegorical figures like this example after training in Paris. The artist wrote of his seraphic subjects, “I have put on wings probably more to symbolize an exalted atmosphere . . . where one need not explain the action of his figures.” Other late 19th-century artists such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens also represented angelic female figures to personify what they perceived as the virtues of women. In Winged Figure, Thayer mixed this idealism with a level of naturalism, particularizing the woman’s features and giving her form a sense of mass and gravity."The Art Institute of Chicago.
