This is Day #32 of the 10th Anniversary of 50 Paintings in 50 States in 50 Days... We left St. Paul, Minnesota in the early morning hours arriving in Fargo, ND at 8am. We wandered the streets of Fargo looking for something interesting to paint and some sustenance to satiate our hunger pangs. We found a bakery that was just opening their doors for the day. They didn't serve breakfast items, but we got hot soup and sandwiches and the women behind the counter were very friendly and showed is fine hospitality. The bakery was also a gift shop full of eclectic items like ceramic swans and country knick knacks galore. We asked if we could paint in their shop and they said yes and were delighted to have us. They said we were the most exciting thing to happen since Ozzy Osborne came into their shop one time!
After bidding farewell to Fargo, we headed South. We needed to make up for lost time and driving South on Interstate 29, hitting as many States as possible over the course of 24 hours, was our plan. Our next stop was Souix Falls, South Dakota. We stopped at a memorial for the USS South Dakota which fought valiantly in the Pacific in WWII.
We got back on I-29 and went further South to Soiux City, Iowa. We weren't sure where to paint in Soiux City so we had James go into a local video store and ask what there was to do in the area. We figured James would be the best representative due to his English charm. The girl at the counter told James that the only thing we would find here was a fight and we should move on to Omaha, Nebraska. Needless to say, we did just that and created the Iowa State painting in the car while driving to Omaha.
By the time we got to Omaha it was around 10PM and we were hungry. We found a place that sold pizza, grabbed a booth and ate pizza and created the Nebraska painting right there. We left Nebraska just before midnight. Our first stop on Day #33 would be Kansas City, Missouri...coming up next!

This is Day #31 of the 10tg Anniversary of 50 Paintings in 50 States in 50 Days... We drove through the night in Wisconsin. By break of dawn we we're in the Northwestern part of the State no too far from the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota. We still needed to make a painting for Wisconsin, it was 5 in the morning and the world around the highway was a bleak frozen tundra of a State. Wisconsin doesn't seem to defrost even in mid April. I saw a highway sign for a frozen lake, one of hundreds of lakes that dotted the countryside, but with both of my companions asleep, I decided to make the call that any unknown frozen lake was as good a place to paint the Wisconsin State painting. Now when I say it was cold, I mean it was coooold! We pulled into an empty parking lot with a lone Porto potty, a boat ramp and a dock. I decided the best place to paint was to set up on the dock. The sun shown brightly but offered no warmth whatsoever. I painted very quickly longing for the heater in our little Scion. The lake was serene, frozen and shining from the sun..it was hard to imagine that in another month life would spring back with abundance in and around the lake. I finished the painting post haste and scrambled back in the car, turned on the heater full blast, and we headed back on the highway to St. Paul, Minnesota.
We arrived at Vort's friend Joe's house late morning and Vort was very excited to reprise visiting a classic breakfast spot he had eaten at with Joe once before. Bunny's Bar & Grill were known for their pork chops and strong screw drivers, of which we had plenty of both. It was the classic old restaurant that has weathered the decades well and always keeps the locals happy. We loved it. We hung out around St. Paul taking in some sights for the rest of the day. We got back to Joe's house and painted the Minnesota State painting in his basement man cave. We took an early evening nap because to make up for lost time and beat the Twin City morning traffic we left for Fargo, ND at 4am on Day #32 ... #50paintings50states50days#10thanniversary#Vorcan#Vort#Cank#Wisconsin#frozenlake#StPaul#Minnesota#bunnysbarandgrill
